The most iconic beach in Australia, Bondi is famous throughout the world for its bronzed bodies, soft sand and surfing dudes.

Beach Location

Located on Australia's east coast, Bondi Beach lies seven kilometres east of Sydney's central business district, and is classed as a Sydney suburb.

In the Aboriginal language, Bondi or Boondi, means ‘water breaking over rocks' or ‘noise of water breaking over rocks.'

Probably one of the most famous beaches in the world, Bondi has soft golden sand, a buzzing atmosphere and is a perennial favourite with surfers.

The beach stretches for one and a half kilometres and is the third most visited site in Sydney after the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.

Bondi's key role in developing Australia's beach culture was highlighted when the Australian National Heritage List included the beach on its list.

The beach was given different hazard ratings by Surf Life Saving Australia in 2004. The northern end is regarded to be safer than the south and has a rating of four (with 10 as the most hazardous); while the southern side is rated as seven due to a famous rip current known as the "Backpackers Rip."

There is also an underwater shark net that is shared during the summer months with other beaches along the southern part of the coast.

In 2007, Bondi Beach set a new Guinness World Record for the largest swimsuit photo-shoot ever. There were 1,010 women in bikinis being photographed on the beach.

Bondi Beach is the end point of the popular City to Surf road running event, which is held each year in August. The race attracts over 63,000 entrants who run the 14 kilometre distance, starting IN the central business district of Sydney and finishing at Bondi.

Bondi Beach is also the home of the well known Bondi Icebergs Winter Swimming Club. The club was founded by a group of local lifesavers who wished to sustain their fitness during the winter period.

Over the years the beach has been used as a location for a number Australian and International movies and television series, as well as hosting the beach volleyball competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
