Until recently the region of the Silver Coast was a well kept secret that only the locals knew about. But now this area, with its rolling landscape, beautiful beaches, great sporting facilities and affordable real estate is a popular destination for tourists, golfers and property investors alike.
Access
The Silver Coast (locally known as Costa de Prata) is less than an hour's drive from Lisbon International airport along the new A8 motorway, which links the vibrant capital of Portugal with the historic city of Porto in the North.
The area will also benefit from the new Lisbon airport - which was initially going to be located at Ota - that is now planned for construction at Alcochete Airport, scheduled to replace or complement the current Portela Airport in the year 2017.
Affordability
The Green fees for the regions golf resorts vary, ranging from €30 to €125, depending on the club and the deals they may offer to certain affiliated hotels and package-deals.
The cost of living in the Silver Coast is a fraction of the Mediterranean hotspots or the Algarve and the people are friendly and welcoming.
Top Resorts & Courses
Praia D'El Rey Golf & Beach Resort
This 18 hole, Par 73 championship links course was designed by American architect Cabell B. Robinson and won last year's coveted European Golf Resort of the Year, awarded by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, as well as being voted Portugal's Leading Resort at the 2007 World Travel Awards.
The sloping greens and sandy dunes contrast sharply with the lush fairways; with nine of the holes tracing through the pine trees and the other nine hugging the Atlantic cliffs, Praia D'El Rey is a challenging but fair golf course that is a firm favourite with golf enthusiasts.
Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club
Situated near Rio Maior, some 60 kilometres from Lisboa, the Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club is one of the current charms of Portuguese golf.
Designed by the U.S. architect Rocky Roquemore, this 18-hole, Par 72 championship course covers 90 hectares and is framed by a landscape in which fragrant flora; gentle pines, decorative eucalyptuses and acacias all exist.
Bom Sucesso
Bom Sucesso is a recently built, spectacular 18-hole championship golf course, occupying an area exceeding 60 hectares.
Located on the shores of Lake de Óbidos and designed by Donald Steel - one of most prestigious golf architects, the field extends up along the venture, offering exceptional views of the surrounding areas.

Regional News
The Silver Coast hugs the North Atlantic coastline and stretches from the industrial district of Porto down to Portugal's largest city, Lisbon.
The area is home to a stunning, silver shimmering, sandy coastline, gentle rolling hills, quaint fishing villages and some of the country's most impressive architectural, religious and historic sites.
As well as great golf resorts the region also has the new Peniche recreation centre, which is a superb place for water sports. Santa Cruz and Peniche (Supertubos beach and Lagide beach) are the areas for surf lovers and the Óbidos lake has sailing, rowing and windsurfing.
Buying property in Portugal is a relatively quick process and foreigners have the same rights as locals, but before you can undertake any financial dealings in Portugal - such as opening a bank account or buying a property - you will need a fiscal or tax card (cartao de contribuinte).
The Silver Coast offers good prospects for rental from both the local market and from holidaymakers. The area is cheaper than the Algarve and has the potential of significant property price rises.
Listed as the third most profitable location in Europe to invest in (by "A Place in the Sun"), the Silver Coast could be the ideal place to buy a second holiday home investment.
The Praia D'El Rey's latest property phase, Vila da Praia, is a Portuguese-style village overlooking the wide Atlantic beaches, offering one-bed apartments from €242,000 and four-bedroom townhouses from €695,000.
Vila da Praia is a superb new beach-side village development, designed in traditional Portuguese style, including cobblestone streets. The charming village houses and light airy apartments are being built to the very highest quality. Currently, off-plan properties are for sale in Vila da Praia, from around €343,000.
