House of Horrors - A Broker's Story

Posted by Jude Buttle on Friday, October 10, 2008

Property horror stories make great entertainment - until they happen to you...

Justin Rowe is a city broker who recently bought a two bed house in Tunbridge Wells, one of the nicest areas of Kent.

A colleague of his was buying an off-plan property in Poland and suggested to Justin that he do the same.

Having made some money out of the city over the last few years, Justin had planned to build an international portfolio, as he thought it was cooler than owning property in the UK.

After going on a two-day inspection trip to the picturesque Polish city of Krakow to view half a dozen developments, he arrived back home to find that his house was not in the state in which he had left it.

The light had been left on in his living room and as Justin stepped through the door, he was greeted by a strong odour.

Justin rushed around the house trying to locate the smell, but found nothing, apart from discovering that the stench was emanating from the living room and master-bedroom.

Justin describes the events. "I wasn't too concerned about the light being on as I had left a spare key with my girlfriend and presumed that she must have been over and neglected to turn off the light.

"I didn't find anything that would have caused such an awful pong, so I aired the place and decided to call up my girlfriend to let her know how the inspection trip went and ask if she wanted to come over. To my surprise, she declined my offer and instead told me she was breaking up with me."

Whilst watering his plants, Justin's girlfriend had stumbled upon his diary while he was away. He continues. "I usually lock my diary up but had forgotten to and it was in full view. She'd flicked through it and read the part about my growing infatuation with a woman that I worked with.

As they had a tempestuous relationship, Justin thought some time out would suffice. He says, "I decided to let her cool down and call her in a couple of days to see if we could sort things out, but my main objective was to locate the stink, which was becoming unbearable.

"The next day I organised for a cleaner to come in and after that didn't solve the problem I called in a plumber, pest inspector, environmentalist, ventilation company and even a spiritualist, to no avail."

Finally, on the verge of insanity and close to putting the house up for sale, Justin noticed a stain on the arm of one of his lounge chairs. He recalls. "The smell had so dominated the room and entire flat that it was difficult to isolate it to one area, but I noticed that the stink was even more potent the closer my nose got to the chairs arm.

"I touched the stain and liquid oozed through the fabric, with the increase in smell nearly knocking me backwards.

"I noticed that the stitching on one of the seams near the stain looked different to the rest of the chair. I took a knife, held a hanky to my nose and cut along the seam.

"What poured out of the chair can only be described as bits of putrefying meat and prawns, covered in a blood coloured fluid.

"The rancid smell hit me hard and immediately I vomited, which did nothing to abate the fermenting stench that was conquering the room."

It turned out that in a fit of jealousy and determined to seek some sort of revenge, Justin's ex-girlfriend had sewn into the bottom of his mattress and lounge armchair some raw meat and seafood and just left it there to rot.

Once Justin has disposed of the items affected, the house was ventilated and painted, returning the property's aroma to its former glory. However, Justin's relationship was far from rosy and, sadly, he never managed to clear the air.
