Turkish Delight - Altinkum

Posted by Jude Buttle on Tuesday, October 14, 2008

The small resort of Altinkum, blessed with three golden beaches, has become a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists.

Location

The resort town of Altinkum is located in the district of Didim on the shore of the Aegean sea of western Turkey.

The town can be reached from Bodrum and Izmir airports, which are both less than two hours away.

The name "Altinkum" translates to "golden sands" and the town lives up to its name with three smooth, golden beaches, which are extremely popular with both British and Turkish tourists.

Background

During the early 90s, Altinkum became popular with tourists from large cities around Turkey such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, who came to the small town and started to build their own summer houses there.

When Turkey's economy started to decline and living in major cities became more of a financial burden, many who owned summer homes in Altinkum decided to move there and make it their primary residence.

This influx of new residents helped Altinkum's local economy and the growth and development of the town.

Lifestyle

The locals in Altinkum have a reputation for being charming and friendly and the area has a relaxed and laid back vibe.

Altinkum has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and gloriously hot summers, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 30°C (86°F) in July and August.

Altinkum has three principal beach areas - First, Second and Third Beaches. The First beach is the focal point of the resort, being the most accessible. All three beaches are served well by restaurants and bars.

The area is a great place for water sports with waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing and diving available.

The new Didim Marina project, expected to be completed in 2009, will be the largest on the coasts of Turkey, and provide visitors with an American style shopping centre and amenities, including restaurants, gym and fitness centre, heliport and accommodation for around 1,000 yachts.

Culture vultures should head to nearby Didim, where there is an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo. There are also organised day trips to Ephesus, one of the best-preserved classical cities in the world, and Pamukkale, which is an amazing area of white-washed hot springs.

Altinkum comes alive at night with a fine selection of night clubs, discos, bars and restaurants to choose from.

Altinkum Property Scene

Altinkum has seen some major changes in the property market over the last few years.

The construction of the large marina, which when completed is expected to hugely increase the number of visitors to the area, and plans for land development and new golf courses, have attracted the attention of property investors en masse.

With the relaxation of foreign ownership restrictions and a more flexible mortgage system, Turkey is trying to encourage more foreign investment as the country strives harder for EU inclusion.

Property prices in Altinkum remain reasonable compared to the rest of the country and with the influx of foreign tourists and investors, especially British, German and Russian, the area continues to flourish.

There's a great opportunity to buy one of two semi detached four bedroom villas in the beautiful Aegean coastal resort of Altinkum in Turkey.

The villas are close to all local amenities and are only a 15 minute walk to the new planned golf course and marina road. Once the golf course and marina open within two years, these villas are expected to increase in price by at least 25 per cent. Purchase price £69,500.

This detached three bedroom villa with stunning sea views is located in a private complex, with its own beach, located in a popular area of Altinkum. Purchase price £110,000.
