Forget Me Not: 5 Reasons to Remember Las Vegas

This gambling oasis in the desert was built from dust in the 1940s with gangster's money and transformed into one of the most famous and popular destinations on the planet.

 

1. Fremont Street Experience

The Fremont Street Experience (FSE) in downtown Las Vegas is a pedestrian mall and one of the city's main attractions.

The FSE occupies the westernmost part of Fremont Street, including the area known for years as "Glitter Gulch," and is a five-block-long 90 foot canopy of bright neon signs and millions of flashing lights that illuminate the vicinity.

Some of the city's most famous vintage casinos are found here, including the Golden Nugget and the Gold Spike; as are most of its strip clubs and stage shows.

Numerous concerts are performed here - many of them free - and every night there is a high-tech light-and-laser show, which is enhanced by a concert-hall-quality sound system.

There's also the popular Neon Museum, which hosts some of the old hotel's neon signs, located at the east end of the Fremont Street Experience.

2. Caesars Palace

Known simply as Caesars, this luxury hotel and casino located on the west side of the Las Vegas Strip is synonymous with the city, entertainment and gambling.

The initial construction took place in 1962, organised by a cabana motel owner, Jay Sarno, with the hotel's inauguration taking place in August 1966 with singer Andy Williams providing the entertainment.

The hotel was named after Julius Caesar as Sarno wanted the name to evoke thoughts of royalty and felt that his guests should feel as if they were at a King's home whilst staying at the hotel. It is called "Caesars" and not "Caesar's" because every guest is a Caesar.

Caesars has 3,348 rooms in five towers: Augustus, Centurion, Roman, Palace, and Forum. The Forum tower features enormous 1,000 square foot guest suites.

Many top performers, such as Judy Garland, Celine Dion, Liberace, George Burns, Diana Ross, Cher, David Copperfield and Frank Sinatra have performed at the hotel.

3. Climate

Set in the middle of the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas has an arid desert climate. This is marked by extremely hot summers, mild winters, year-round sunshine and hardly any rainfall.

July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures regularly exceeding 38 °C but thankfully, the humidity is low.

The hottest ever temperature in Las Vegas was recorded at 47 °C, which was set twice, once in 1942 and the other in 2005, both in July.

Winter in Las Vegas is mild, cool and sometimes windy, but snow is a rarity in the city.

4. Weddings

Known as the marriage capital of the world due to the ease and cheapness of obtaining a marriage license, Las Vegas has a variety of weddings on offer.

Most weddings performed in Las Vegas will be a civil or religious service dependent upon the wedding selected. Venues include local churches, restaurants, golf courses and a chapel.

Many of the chapels, such as Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, also offer themed weddings. Common themes include Star Trek, Hawaiian, gothic and weddings with an Elvis Presley impersonator.

5. The Liberace Museum

Liberace was a hugely popular musician in America, known for his glitzy outfits and kitsch stage sets.

The late entertainer, who was a regular visitor to Las Vegas, founded the Liberace Museum in 1979.

The museum houses his garish costumes, collection of pianos and a custom made Rolls Royce, which is covered in tiny mirrors.

His 'crown jewels' include a spectacular piano-shaped watch encrusted with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds, and a piano-shaped ring containing 260 diamonds in a white and yellow gold 18-carat setting with ivory and black jade keys. Proceeds from the not-for-profit museum support scholarships for the performing arts.
