Known for its stunning coastline and national parks, Khao Lak has made a remarkable recovery from the devastation of the tsunami and is now more beautiful than ever.
Beach Location
The beach of Khao Lak is just an hour's drive north of Phuket International Airport in Takua Pa district in the Phang Nga province of Thailand.
Set on the gorgeous Andaman seaboard, Khao Lak is one of Thailand's most peaceful resort destinations. This lovely stretch of coastline is surrounded by sweeping hills and complemented by three nearby national parks.
Following the tragedy of the 2004 tsunami resulting from the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, the area of Khao Lak has made a remarkable recovery with newly refurbished hotels providing better quality accommodation and improved facilities.

Hot Temptations
The Khao Lak beach is spotless and has medium-fine yellow sand, which is caressed by clear blue waters.
The beach still remains relatively unknown and has not yet been invaded by coach tours, so the area is very popular with those looking for a beautiful remote spot to relax.
There are some charming bungalows scattered under the palms and fir trees right beside the beach, which narrows towards a small cluster of bars and restaurants.
At the start of the season in December and January, the waves can be a little choppy and problematic for small children, but when it settles the waters are calm and inviting.
It takes three hours for tourists to travel to the Similan (popular for scuba-diving) and Surin Islands by chartered boats that leave from Thap Lamu Pier in Thai Muang District, which is 30 minutes from Khao Lak beach.
Inland, the forested slopes beckon with nature tours and activities like rafting, elephant trekking and hiking to temple caves. Giant tropical trees and sparkling waterfalls provide a home to many species of wildlife and exotic birds in this surprisingly tranquil place.
