Lone stars in Austin

Posted by Catherine Deshayes on Wednesday, May 20, 2009

With more live music venues than any other city in Texas, the capital city of Austin has been dubbed ‘The Live Music Capital of the World.' TheMoveChannel.com takes a look at what Austin has to offer, with and without a soundtrack...

Once known purely for its country and blues music, Austin's music scene is now as diverse as its many other cultural offerings.

Founded on a river-bend in the Colorado River in 1839, Texas' capital came into its own when the enormous, sprawling University of Texas opened in 1883. Today, quality of life reigns supreme and internet squillionaires rub shoulders with oil magnates and struggling artists, heading to one of Austin's many parks, Town Lake or the natural pools.

Austin is an eclectic mix of retro sounds - rock diva Janis Joplin is one of the sounds of the city, along with indie rock, jazz-funk and country - and its residents are keen to keep it slightly alternative - with car stickers even proclaiming ‘keep Austin weird.'

The city's music scene revolves around the famous venues of 6th Street and a collection of music festivals which attracts visitors from all corners of the globe.

Austin City Limits, the longest-running live-music music programme on American TV, and Capital Sports & Entertainment run the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, a music and art festival held at Zilker Park.

Austin also plays host to the Urban Music Festival, held during the Texas Relays weekend in April, the Austin Reggae Festival, also in April, and Carnival in February.

Away from the high notes, Austin has a vibrant theatre scene, with many local theatre companies attracting global acts. Ballet Austin, the fourth largest ballet academy in the country, has its home in the city and the Austin Film Festival and South by Southwest Festival are also held in the Texan capital.

If you fancy being a culture vulture for a day, the Austin Museum of Art, which displays contemporary exhibitions of work by both international and local artists, is well worth a visit. You will be spoilt for choice at the Blanton Museum of Art, which is home to Latin American, Renaissance and Western art. The Museum of Art Laguna Gloria is a must-see, not least for the stunning landscaped grounds and historic villa it is housed in on Lake Austin.

Sporty types will adore the central Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail, which attracts cyclists from all over the world and rockclimbers or extreme sports enthusiasts will flock to Hippy Hollow, a county park alongside Lake Travis.
