Best Beaches in the World: Ipanema - Brazil

Ipanema is a world famous beach that is often frequented by Rio's in-crowd. An area full of vibrancy, atmosphere and beautiful sand, the beach is so popular they even wrote a song about it.

Beach Location

Ipanema beach is to be found in the neighbourhood of Ipanema, which is located on the southern region of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between Leblon and Arpoador.

Already a popular beach, Ipanema took on iconic status when the song "The Girl from Ipanema" was released in the 60s. Written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, the song reached the U.S. top 5 in the summer of 1964.

Hot Temptations

Copacabana may be the more famous beach but Ipanema reputedly attracts a classier clientele.

This 2km long white sandy beach is a hang-out place for the hip, trendy and beautiful brigade. There are numerous bronzed beaus sporting designer shades whilst displaying their soccer skills and model girls frolicking in tight, skimpy bikinis.

The beach of Ipanema is famously known for being one of the most social beaches in the world. Beers are sold up and down the beach along with the traditional Brazilian drink, Cachaça - pronounced "kashasa" - which is a sugar cane rum made in Brazil.

There's so much more to do on the beach than just topping-up your tan, as Ipanema is also ideal for the sporty types who can choose between football, volleyball or foot-volley, which originated in Brazil and is a combination of volleyball and football.

The beach is also popular with surfers and those that enjoy their Capoeira (a fluent mixture of martial arts and dance), performed on a Sunday when the beach lane is open only for pedestrians.

In the winter the surf at Ipanema can reach 10-15 feet and the water quality varies with days of light-blue water to a more murky green after heavy rains. Constant swells manage to keep the water clean.

Ipanema's beach also has an area called "the gay beach," situated near Rua Farme de Amoedo; which is well-known for having a gay-friendly environment.

The Travel Channel recently listed Ipanema Beach as the sexiest beach in the world.
