% of homes on market by area

I am intersted in knowing just how many in numbers are on the market in each area and what percentage of private dwellings are on the market. Can anyone tell me where I can find a reliable source of this information, the government statistics seem to be useless on this point. If you have set up as an estate agent you will probably have an idea of the figures involved. The specific town I am interested in is Reading Berks but a nationwide average would be a start. Thanks to anyone who helps in advance.
