Buying from family

I wish to buy my mother's home and have arranged a mortgage. Are there any shortcuts to avoid high conveyancing costs? Is it possible to use just the one solicitor for both, or for one of us to represent ourself?

I think that you should be ok to use the same solicitor as your mother in this instance. Normally, we wouldn't suggest that using the same solicitor as the vendor will be cheaper or quicker, but since the sale is within the family, it actually seems like quite a sensible option. You may want to phone some of the solicitors directly, as their published fee structure would probably not take this into account this sort of situation.

You would still generally be better to use a conveyancing specialist rather than the family solicitor (if you have one).

I wouldn't suggest that either of you represent yourself unless you have the time to make sure you are doing everything properly, (or preferably some experience), as there is a reasonable amount of work that must be done correctly.
