Buying in Greece

I'm very interested in buying a holiday / retirement property in Greece or on one of the Islands but as my Greek is pretty dismal (at present) I'm trying to find where there are commuities of "English" speaking people as I think I need to be located near these.

Any help would be appreciated - Thanks KF

Hi Keith,
my wife and I are just back from the greek islands,(looking for property)and ended up spending most of the time on Leros. We found some nice places but that is another story. On leros you will find most of the brits(ex-pat)at the top of the hill from the port.PLATINOS. On Kos there is a street called bar street, most owned by brits.
Hope this is of some help to you.Good luck.

I think you will find English speaking communities in any of the touristy islands - Corfu, Crete, Cyprus, Rhodes etc, but you may have to go to touristy areas to find them...

If you wish to move to a rural, quiet area of Greece, then you would probably struggle. But if you were to re-locate to a more touristy area, then you would be fine, and would no doubt pick up the local lingo in no time.

Why not check out :
http://greece.themovechannel.com and email some of the agents listed there, explaining your fears and concerns.

They will be able to advise you, and many offer relocation advice and help, which if you wanted it to, could include a basic langauge course.

Thanks for all your replies. I wrote to the British Embassy in Athens and they confirmed that most Brits go to Crete, Corfu, Zante, Kos and Rhodes.

They also told me of many places where Brits are not allowed to buy and they call these Border Areas. This includes Samos which is disappointing as I really love this island.

Thanks to all.

Hello, I wish you the best of luck in your search for a house in Greece.

We have an estate agency in the south eastern corner of Crete and here, there is a small English community, but nonetheless evident. Makriyialos is a very popular place to come either for a holiday or to live, with UK customers, as it is such a lovely part of the island.

If you want information about this area, look at our forum and post some enquiries. Hopefully people in the area will offer you independant advise. http://www.cretan-homes.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl
Have a look at my website for more information.

Kind regards

RE: Buying in Greece (in reply to Guest

Hi everyone,

I lived in Greece for nearly 5 years. I really enjoyed that time and can recommend that experience to everyone who is open for a new live. I recently started with my own website with information about Crete and Greece (which I will extend in the next weeks/months) and I also got some really nice properties there.

Please let me know what you think about the site and if you got any ideas what could be important for someone thinking to move to Greece.

Find your dream on Crete and escape abroad.

Good luck for the search

Guys,

I am living in Paros, a popular holiday destination in the middle of the Aegean sea (Cyclades). This island have a great English speaking community too

If somebody is thinking to buy a property in Greece let me recommend you this article about property prices, taxes, fees in connection of real estate matters. Let me know if it helped you!
