You really need to examine the terms of the contract. The document you signed is the first point of reference for you. If this was indeed a 6 month contract, you would normally have no obligation to stay in the property beyond the term and you wouldn't normally even have to give notice (as the contract would expire at the end of the term). Normally the onus is on you to request an extension to the contract prior to a certain date. However, you may have signed something with unusual clauses in it, which could muddy the waters somewhat. I'd start by reading it thoroughly and seeing what light it sheds.
