Social exclusion

Successive conservative governments and Tony Blair under labour have promised to end social exclusion and redistribute wealth to the poor. All have failed. Once again Mr Blair is trumpeting an end to poverty, disillusionment and social problems on English housing estates, with the announcement of a new program of measures and a large financial package. Will this time really be any different?

As an ardent Tory, I would have to say that the current crop of measures is typically Labour - all spin and no substance!

Isn't social exclusion just a fancy name for 'poverty'?

There is certainly a link between social exclusion and poverty, but the two are not exact matches. You don't have to be poor to feel outside of mainstream society. Similarly, not all poor people would be classed as socially excluded. I beleive the term really relates to a basic standard of oppportunity in life as well as quality of daily living.
