being evicted because i bought a shed

About a month ago I decided to buy a shed which I could keep my bike in (for insurance purposes), so with the help of my parents I bought a medium sized (Height 5foot 9, width 6 foot, depth 4 foot) metal one. The shed is around the back of the house on the house property. When I was erecting the shed the landlords actually came round (without consent but they live on the same street) and starting insulting my choice of shed and then a few days later I received a letter asking me to take it down. This I thought was just totally ridiculous so I said no. Then I was sent a letter saying I must move out in 2 months!

Can they really do this?

A landlord can evict you for absoloutly no reason at all if he wishes provided that he gives you at least two months notice and the notice does not end within the fixed period of your assured tenancy agreement. (This is normally six months).
You would have done better to ask your landlord before acquiring the shed and errecting it on his land. You would appear to have learned a lesson the hard way.

you do realise that I paid to live there and had the right to enjoy the property. it was none of the landlord's business. what would have happened if i parked a 4x4 car in the drive which they didn't like the style of?

Unfortunately, it is the landlord's business as he owns the property. You are entitled to quiet enjoyment of it while you rent it from him in the state that it was when you viewed and accepted it. If the landlord did not like the car you parked on his drive, he could also serve you with notice if he wished. Remember that the fact you are renting a property does not mean that you own it and can therefore do what you like to it. For example, if you do not like the colour scheme in your living room and decide to paint it entirely matt black with pink spots, your landlord may well decide to repaint the room when you move out, and deduct the cost of doing so from your deposit.

When you rent a property you agree not to alter the property in any way such that when you leave it is different from when you moved in. What is inevitable is that during your tenancy things will change (especially for un-furnished) because you will be moving your own items into the property. For example you will need things like a sofa, book case, desk, car, shed, bed etc. These things are needed because you are living there! Now I think it is crazy to suggest that before I go and buy my new sofa I should ask the landlord because maybe they would have an objection to me getting a black leather sofa because they think brown ones go much better with the colour of the paint on the walls! A similar argument can be made about all of my personal items.

The fact is that this clause that you can be evicted with 2 months notice for whatever reason gives landlords too much power to the point where they think they can control the lives of their tenants, and do try in some cases.
