What do we do next

 
Hi, My partner and I have a 1 bedroom flat in Portsmouth that we bought on the shared ownership scheme 4 Years ago. When we bought it we thought it was a great scheme but now we are not so sure...... In fact we are getting married next year and we were hoping to start a family soon. We contacted the housing association and requested to be put back on the list for a 2 bed property . To our big disappointment we were told that we wouln't qualify for a property because we already had one? I explained that we wanted to start a family and our current property would be back on their list too but she said we couldn't have our names on any deeds if we wanted to re-apply for a shared ownership property? So if I understand it right we would need to sell our place, be homeless and then re-apply. How mad is that? Today we went around to see some properties . They were l £179k for a 2 bed appartment . We can't afford it. It's really heartbreaking. It's like either we stay where we are and we can't have a baby or we buy a property outright with a 2nd bedroom but then we can't afford to have a family?

It's worth checking with some other housing associations to see if their policies are the same?

However, unfortunately I can see their point of view and I doubt there will be a way around this. The problem is that you are now the legal owner of the property you are in. Therefore you wouldn't qualify for the right to buy scheme as you are already a homeowner. If you were to be allowed to apply again, there is no law that would allow them to force you to sell your current property, therefore the only way that they can prevent you from owning multiple properties under the right to buy scheme, is by making it an application criteria.

Your situation is unfortunate, but the likelihood is that you will have to sell your property, rent somewhere for a period of time, then reapply for a larger property.
