The biosphere has landed: Amazon’s new HQ unveiled

You can buy a greenhouse from Amazon.com, but soon the company will be working inside one – if its plans are approved for a new headquarters.

The US retail company revealed sketches and photos of its futuristic HQ, which have been submitted to Seattle city officials.

The office will centre on a large spherical structure, which will allow its employees to socialise with each other as well as plants and even mature trees “in a more natural, park-like setting”.

“The generative idea is that a plant-rich environment has many positive qualities that are not often found in a typical office setting,” reads the appropriately-named company’s official proposal.

“While the form of the building will be visually reminiscent of a greenhouse or conservatory, plant material will be selected for its ability to co-exist in a microclimate that also suits people.”

The building will span five floors and 6,000 square metres of office space and will contain dining, meeting and lounge space.

Buildings that inspired Amazon’s futuristic new design.

“To encourage growth and maintain the health of the plants, the building’s interior will include high bay spaces… capable of accommodating mature trees,” added the company’s documents.
