UK rents force thousands into debt

Expensive UK rents are forcing thousands of tenants into debt, according to new data from the Consumer Credit Counselling Service.

10,000 people contact the charity to ask for help with rent arrears last year, Home Move reports, an increase of 27 per cent from 2010.

On average, these 10,000 people were £760 behind on their rent, with those renting from private landlords the worst off, owing £924 on average. Tenants under housing associations, on the other hand, were an average of £705 behind.

The average rent paid by people contacting the charity climbed by 2.4 per cent in 2011, CCCS adds, as the cost of letting a property becomes tougher during economic recession.
