The language of love

Friday, February 12, 2010

Catherine Deshayes

Part of the fun of going on a foreign holiday is experiencing the different traditions and customs of that country - and each country speaks a different language of love, so if you are on the hunt for a holiday romance this year, check out a brand new guide to flirting around the globe...

Travel website simonseeks.com has taken the upcoming Valentine's Day weekend as an excuse to employ a ‘flirt coach and romance guru,' to explain the ins and outs of romance in different countries.

Peta Heskell gives visitors to the site the low down on the best ways to find a holiday romance, with advice tailored to the specific country they are travelling to.

Tips include how to flirt with your fan in Spain and, since the art of hand-kissing is making a comeback in Germany and Austria, if he takes your hand in both hands while looking fully into your eyes it's a good sign.

If you are making a trip to one of the most romantic countries in the world - France - you should expect 'direct banter and open flattery' says Peta, while Japanese people are said to be more indirect: 'Looking down or away but never open eye contact. Perceived shyness is very attractive so in a group you look at everyone but the person you fancy.'

In Spain, vigorous fanning is a sign of love while running your fingers along the ribs signals, "I'm interested, let's talk".

Peta says, "The reason that holidays and romance go together is simple. Location, location, location. We've usually travelled to a place where we're not known - and so aren't half as worried about what people think.

"Our natural inhibitions start to melt, often aided by alcohol.  We've time to hang out and socialize. And perhaps more importantly we often focus on finding a romance. And what we focus on, we tend to get!"

We Brits are apparently far more restrained with the old flirting than some nations and are more likely to break the ice with a compliment disguised as an insult - charming!

In Brazil you can look forward to lots of eye contact and touching on the forearm, while Croatian men prefer jaw jutting and chest puffing and Americans resort to classic body language such as wide eyes, batting eyelids and hair touching.

The site recommends the pool, bar and organised trips as the best places to flirt and readers are advised to ‘lurk and learn' when they first arrive in a new country by spending a few days people watching.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S EVERYONE !
