Plans for a new development at Birmingham New Street station in the heart of the city have been revealed today, September 19th, by Network Rail and Birmingham City Council.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) ran a competition to select a firm to spearhead the design of the redevelopment of Birmingham's New Street Station and the surrounding areas.
Foreign Offices Architects won the RIBA competition to design the scheme with its metallic designs, beating off competition from 48 other entries.
The new Birmingham Gateway development, which is scheduled for completion in 2014, is being planned in conjunction with Advantage West Midlands and Centro, and will play a key role in Birmingham's long-term ambition to become one of the world's Top 25 cities in which to live.
Councillor Mike Whitby, Chairman of the New Street Gateway Funders' Board, said, "The Birmingham Gateway, which will support over 52 million passengers a year, demands a world class architectural vision to embody the rebirth of New Street station."
Possible future redevelopment of The Pallasades, the shopping centre on top of New Street Station is also in the pipeline.
