Canada's quality of life is streets ahead of the US, according to a new survey...

Canadian cities have put in a superb showing in Mercer's annual worldwide quality of living rankings, with Vancouver retaining its top 5 status as the highest ranked Canadian city at number 4, followed by:

- Toronto (15^th)
- Ottawa (19^th)
- Montreal (22^nd).

Canada left the US in the dust, with highest ranked American city being San Francisco, which crawled in at 29^th, followed by:

- Boston (37^th)
- Chicago (44^th)
- Washington DC (44^th)
- New York (49^th)

Slagin Parakatil, senior researcher at Mercer, observed: "Personal safety within Canadian cities ranks among the highest in the region. This is due to a relatively low crime rate and a stable political environment. In contrast, many of the Latin American cities such as Caracas, Bogotá or Port au Prince continue to be undermined by crime and political and economic turmoil. Traffic congestion and pollution have also had an impact."
