The RAF Burtonwood air base near Warrington in Cheshire has been earmarked for an urban village since the base closed in 1993 but rumours earlier this year gave rise to fears that NATO had plans for the site.
Now Defence Estates have sold the 227-acre site to Wilson Bowden's house-building arm, David Wilson Homes and the massive regeneration scheme looks set to get underway.
The scheme, known as Chapelford Urban Village has outline planning permission for 2000 homes and will create a community of over 5,000 people. It will include leisure facilities and health centre, together with some commercial space and possibly a school.
The project is situated just a few miles from Warrington, in Cheshire, near the M62 motorway. A new junction is has just been completed on the M62 to facilitate access and the site is close to Omega Park, the new seven million sq ft industrial and office development.

Ian Robertson, deputy group chief executive and finance director at Wilson Bowden said:
"We have exchanged contracts and received planning permission for around 2,000 homes and a village centre. This will include shops, commercial and leisure facilities and a doctor's surgery.â€
"We are currently working with the local council and residents to finalise the planning procedure and focus on the general infrastructure of the village. We hope to start building in March - April and it is possible that the first house occupancy may take place at the end of next year. It is a very exciting development."
