Queen's spech 2000

06/12/2000

As expected, the Queen's speech contained reference to a number of property-related initiatives being pursued by the government. In brief:

  • Legislation will be brought forward to ease the process of buying and selling a house (seller's pack).
  • Legislation will be introduced that will make it easier for leaseholders to purchase the freehold on their property and that will introduce Commonhold - a new type of property tenure.
  • There will be improved protection for homeless people.
  • Urban school reform will figure heavily in the government's education policy.

The Queen's speech, which is written by the government only gives a broad indication of plans for legislation that will be introduced during the parliamentary session, without establishing any concrete details in terms of the content of any future bill.
