Albania gets cash boost for EU entry

Thursday, October 02, 2008

Catherine Deshayes

The European Commission is granting Albania £193.2 million to assist its preparations for entry into the European Union...

The money will be paid over the next three years and will go towards improving the country's agriculture, transport, energy, environmental and regional development, as well as police and judiciary improvement.

This in turn should improve the quality of housing in Albania and could boost international demand for residential properties.

The European Commission office said that the programme is designed to help prepare the country for future European Union accession.

Albania is one of the poorest countries in Europe and is heavily reliant on donations, having received in the region of £950 million in aid from the EU since 1991.
