People who live in Spain are more likely to live longer lives than those in the UK, claims a new study.
Research by uSwitch.com found that a typical Spaniard lives for an average 79.9 years, while the average Briton lives to 78.9 years of age.
Figures also showed that a Spanish national is also more likely to enjoy a longer retirement, as they typically retire a year earlier than their British counterparts.
High living costs in the UK were cited as one reason behind this trend, as some people cannot afford to give up work and live off their pension.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, observed: "We may earn substantially more than our European neighbours but when it comes to quality of life, we remain the ''sick man'' of Europe."
"Spain also has 80% more sunshine than in the UK, thereby providing a further boost to peoples' wellbeing".
This could explain recent figures from Holiday-Rentals, which show that 31 per cent of British-owned properties in Europe are in Spanish towns and cities.
