It has served The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, but in recent years has become known as one of the country's drearier terminals - now, Heathrow Airport is saying farewell to Terminal 2 after 54 years and 316million passengers...
The closure will pave the way for a £1bn redevelopment meaning the terminal will be able to handle an estimated 20million passengers a year.
The terminal, which was the first permanent terminal at Heathrow and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on April 1, 1955, will become the new home of the Star Alliance network of airlines including Continental, United Airlines and Air New Zealand.
Colin Matthews, BAA chief executive said: 'The closure of terminal 2 marks an important moment in the modernisation of Heathrow.
'We look forward to the new terminal 2 providing a better experience for our passengers, with less impact on the environment.'
The redevelopment of terminal 2 is part of a wider £4.8billion redesign of Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in Europe.
