It's just what every woman dreams of - being whisked away on a romantic Valentine's Day break to Rome, Paris or Prague - but it's actually Benidorm that has beaten off competition from those typical romantic hotspots to claim the title of top Valentine's weekend destination for British couples...

When you think of a break in Benidorm, the words clubbing, booze and stag nights are more likely to spring to mind than roses, true love and romance.

Not so, says TravelRepublic.co.uk, whose latest research reveals that the Spanish resort of Benidorm has all the ingredients needed for the perfect lovers break.

The Costa Blanca beach resort has claimed the title of top Valentine's weekend destination, with February 14th visits to the high-rise resort soaring by 55 per cent compared to this time last year.

More than 500,000 Brits head to Benidorm, which has transformed from a sleepy village of just 1,500 people to the tourist mecca it is today.

I can't say I can see the romance in the town that taste forgot, or fancy a candlelit dinner at one of the 70 British themed pubs or cocktails at one of the 600 bars and clubs.

But I'm clearly missing something. After all, what do I know? My partner and I are spending this Valentines Day with my parents (!).

Paul Furner, Managing Director of TravelRepublic.co.uk said, "We are totally gobsmacked by the fact that Benidorm has come out on top as the destination of choice for the Valentine's weekend this year.

"Demand has also been really strong for short, romantic city breaks, with Rome, Prague, Paris and Amsterdam following hot on Benidorm's heels," he added.
