Talari is a beautiful sanctuary in Southern Costa Rica. El General river runs along one of the property boundaries and there are 3 natural springs active during the rainy season. Drainage has never been a problem on the land and small creeks run throughout the property efficiently evacuating water. There are approximately 2kms of trails running through the grounds, from along the river up through the forests. There is an orchard with over 40 fruit trees, a vegetable plot where we grow our own vegetables and herbs. There are some outbuildings used for storage and an area where we keep our chickens. If you wish to keep goats, a few pigs or even a cow there is a small field and stable. Services * Access. The 500m road from the road is paved and accessible with all vehicles. * Water. The supply is from the community water distribution service in Rivas controlled by the health department. It is of high quality and very reliable. Talari does have 2X1000 litre emergency backup water tanks. The El General river provides water for irrigation. * Electricity. Provided by ICE. Talari has its own transformer. * Telephone. Talari has 2 phone lines - for phone/fax and internet. Business Before our arrival, Talari had been run as only a background interest by the then owner with little marketing or effort. The outgoings of Talari are up to the buyer. For example, the previous owners chose to sacrifice large profits and benefit the community by employing many local people. However, the hotel can easily be run by a couple as we are doing now with great success. Average monthly costs are as follows: Water - 8 USD Electricity - 120 USD Gas - 30 USD Telephone - 100 USD Food - 600 USD Total - 858 USD Within these costs, all normal family living expenses are already accounted for. Tax here is relatively low (around 20%) and so healthy yearly profits can be made whilst living in this paradise. For example, in Nov 2006 gross income was 6667 USD, and Dec 2006 gross income was 7570 USD. The season (longer here than on the coast) runs from Nov to July with traditionally the strongest months being January to May. Thus, post tax and costs, Dec 2006 has a net income of 5369 USD (7570 - 858 = 6712 USD, less 20% tax) If the new owner wishes to employ people, a cook (for example on a 42 hour week) would cost the business 370 USD per month (includes salary and social security payment) and a garderner, roughly the same.
