From Albena to the Romanian border, you will find a succession of breathtaking views; soft chalky cliffs, which run for miles north of Balchik; spectacular Chirakman Hill which guards Kavarna harbour; the hard limestone headland of Kaliakra rising steep from the sea. At Kavarna steep wooded valleys cut deep inlets to form natural harbours. Beyond Shabla, the cliffs give way to large lakes, protected from the sea by sand bars; and long sandy beaches stretch to the border. Much of the coast is protected for its wildlife. There are many opportunities to watch birds and discover the wonderful array of wildflowers as well as enjoying deserted beaches. Turning inland, you will find a land of wide horizons and distant views, for in that part of Bulgaria you are at the most westerly tip of the great steppes which arch north and east far into Central Asia. Much of the undulating countryside is farmed.
