The rich wooded landscape holds the memories of ancient times. It is from here the stories of Fionn Mac Cumhail originated. The Salmon of Knowledge was caught in the River Boyne that flows through Bective Estate. Here the oldest bridge in Ireland Clady Bridge crosses the River Clady as it enters the majestic Boyne. Downriver is Bective Abbey built in 1150. It was the second Cistercian Abbey in Ireland after Mellifont was founded by Murchadh OMael Sheachlainn King of Meath and housed up to 35 monks and 50 lay brothers. King Henry VIII closed the Abbey in 1537 during the suppression of the monasteries. A quote from Wares Annals the last abbot John Englishe was found to be in possession of a church, hall and cloister with certain chambers and other buildings, together with two hundred and five acres of arable land, seven of meadow and thirty three of pasture in the town-land of Bective, being the demesne of the Abbey, also a water mill and fishing weir all valued at £19-6-8 as well as other land valued at £61-11-8. The body of the Norman Hugh De Lacy is buried here (His head is buried in St. Thomas Abbey, Dublin). In 1639 Richard Bolton, the cruellest soldier in Cromwells army took over Bective and it remained in the Bolton family for 200 years. Richard Bolton was ancestor to Lady Diana Spencer (the late Princess Diana) and the current Princes Royal, William and Harry.
