The central part of the beach forms the centerpiece for the downtown area. Toward either end of this miles-long beach, the true allure of the North Coast becomes evident as civilization wanes and natural surroundings predominate. "Time Magazine" has described the area as having one of the last, long stretches of undeveloped beach in the Caribbean. With miles and miles of vibrant coral reefs, diving is a major attraction. There are a number of dive shops mostly located in the oceanfront hotels. Deep water, SCUBA diving for the experienced aquanaut and protected, shallow water snorkeling for the beginner are the norm with dozens of dive locations to explore. With the best diving from May to September (and longer depending on the weather) a convenient reef is no more than a short swim from shore.
