Evia, the second largest of the Greek islands lies opposite the mainland. It is a long island and central Evia is reached by ferry from the tiny port of Agia Marina which is only a 45 minute drive from Athens international airport.  Both the ferry boats and the port itself have recently been upgraded and the crossing to the small resort of Styra takes about 45 minutes.

Evia has the advantage of not having an airport, the result of which is that it is one of the most unspoilt of Greek islands.  Even in the height of summer the beaches are never crowded.  It is an island which is beloved by those who seek beautiful coastal and mountain scenery and enjoy walking and cycling as well as the more traditional pleasures of swimming or lazing in the sun on some of Europe's quietest beaches.  Nearly every village and every beach has a taverna or two serving the islands traditional and mouth watering dishes.  It is also an island with a long cultural tradition which still continues to attract writers and artists.

Tsakei is a small village with narrow streets and quaint winding footpaths where time seems to have stood still. During the last few decades of the 20th century, the village suffered from rural depopulation as the young people left for the cities and the population fell to about 100 people.  Now new life is being breathed into Tsakei as the old village houses are being bought up and restored or rebuilt but this is being done in a way which has not destroyed the villages character.  Its footpaths and narrow streets remain  unchanged.

The olive mill was a central feature of village life.  This mill in Tsakei remained in use until 1990 and still contains the machinery, including the olive press and grinding stones, from when it was actively producing olive oil. 

The mill is a single storey building with one long room of 120 sq.m. It contains an outstanding example of a traditional, high beamed ceiling.  It is on a plot of 180 sq.m. so there is space in front of the mill for a garden and parking area.  Most of the neighbouring properties have been modernized or rebuilt.

The mill could be completely renovated to provide a charming single storey 3 bedroom house or alternatively it could be demolished and using the existing stone, rebuilt as a two storey house with a balcony upstairs to take advantage of the sea view.  The crushing stones can be used to create attractive features either inside or outside the house, especially in the garden where they can make an excellent garden table.

Water is still connected to the property and electricity is available immediately outside.

Tsakei is less than 2 kilometers from the nearest sandy beaches and enjoys views across the olive groves and farmland leading down to the coast.  There are shops in the nearby villages of Zarakes and Almyropotama and at Styra, which is about 15 minutes away there is a wider range of shopping facilities.
