Berlin-Lichtenberg is one of the up-and-coming districts of the city on the Spree. While, for many Berlin residents and visitors to the city, Lichtenberg remains unknown territory, insiders and people in the know appreciate the many advantages of this easterly district – after all, features of the location include Europe's biggest zoo and the Friedrichsfelde palace, proximity to the Spree, moderate rents and a traditional neighbourhood culture. The fact that the Alexanderplatz can be reached within 15 minutes means that Lichtenberg is a real option even for fans of the city-centre. This lively district also benefits from its closeness to Mitte and Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain, to the popular urban recreational area of Treptower Park and the rural environment around the lake, the Rummelsburgersee. Because of its promising reserves of land, this part of the city can only grow in importance as a site for new residential projects, making the whole district an attractive area for students and young families to live in. Lichtenberg offers a well-balanced social infrastructure, excellent shopping and very extensive areas of parkland and greenery in which to relax.
