The history of this ancient town began as a castle in the employ of Lajatico, under which it remained until the 12th century, when both castles were assigned to the bishop of Volterrai. In 1434 the fortress of Orciatico was dismantled by the Florentines.
In 1833 the village counted 687 inhabitants. Today the town has about 1330 inhabitants. Orciatico develops in Valdera, in the hilly area of the Pisan Hills, and is lapped to the north by the Fosce torrent, while to the south by the Foscecchia stream, which are both born from the hills of Poggio Mela (655 m) and Poggio alle Palancole (573 m), reliefs that rise a little to the west of the village, and then take the river Era. Around the village, near the forest of the Mofeta dei Borboi, some natural phenomena of carbon dioxide emission have been studied, already documented by Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti in the XVIII century and object of studies by CNR in 1995.
Orciatico is about 7 km from Lajatico, 17 from Volterra, and just over 60 km from Pisa.
So in just over an hour you can reach the Galilei airport of Pisa, Livorno-port. At about 2 hours we find Florence.
